In Peru, you know it's July because it's the one time of year you can buy a Peruvian flag almost anywhere. July 28th is Peru's Independance Day and every building is required to fly the national flag or they can be fined. It also seems to be a popular time for weddings, or at least amongst people we know. There's one every month from May - September. As far as involvement, the June wedding was the biggest for us. I somehow ended up making the wedding cupcake cake. The wedding was a mix of American and Peruvian traditions as the bride was American and the groom Peruvian. After accepting the cake responsability I had to test out different recipes to see which one looked and tasted best. So every Bible study, youth group and other meeting we had, I took cupcakes along to get feedback. I ended up making about 100 chocolate, 100 ginger and 50 vanilla for the wedding. Everyone is very surprised when I say ginger, but they're more like a spice cake, but very yummy, Rich's favourite. The big challenge was getting them to Chiclayo 3 hours away on the bus. I packed them in plastic tubs and prayed, and thankfully they all made it there safely. It took quite a while to ice them all but it was a fun challenge. Rich had the challenge of translating for the wedding at the last minute as the translator didn't show up. The wedding was very nice. I've never seen two wedding the same so it's always fun seeing different personal touches. While away overnight, we realized how well Lucas was doing with toilet training as he kept his pull-ups dry the whole time. I would have said he was officially toilet-trained after that, but this week hasn't gone quite so well. That may have more to do with how busy we as parents are. He still rarely asks to go to the bathroom so still a bit more to go. Recently Lucas drew his first recognizable person with head, body, arms, legs, hands, feet and a face. I was very surprised, when after being quite quiet in the living room, came to the kitchen to show me his drawing. Emily is also changing so quickly. She loves saying 'hola' these days, especially to her toys. Video of it is on photos page.
This month is one of our busiest of the year with the Bible institute running. Rich is teaching 35 hours in the next 3 weeks. I'm enjoying having an excuse to bake almost every day for the students. This week, only 2 managed to come. Hopefully we'll have more next week. And the last two weeks should have around 15 as it's holidays for those studying at university. The schedule of who's teaching what week is on the prayer points.
As well as a busy time for weddings, it's also a busy time of year for babies. I know of 4 friends due any day, one of which I may have the job of looking after her older child Grace who is just a week older than Lucas. That will be a fun challenge. Will keep you posted on how that goes. Until next time...
